Lifesavers Emerging in Bolivia

“This is Hannah,” a 12-year-old Bolivian student stopped a passerby on the street, pointing to the 12-week fetal model in his hand. “She was conceived in rape. Is it okay to kill her?”

This young student - Jose - was brave. But he was more than that; he was a modern-day hero. 

Jose is one of the 24 students who was both sacrificial enough and courageous enough to give up this Friday and Saturday a week and a half ago to attend our LIFESAVER Practicum in La Paz, Bolivia. 

Bolivia doesn’t yet have any pro-life student teams - in the whole country. Abortion isn’t legal, except in the case of rape and a few other situations. In these cases, abortion is sometimes even forced, as was the sadly common case of baby Indigo whose teenage mother (a rape victim) was forced to give birth prematurely. Doctors did not provide any healthcare to her pre-term baby, resulting in the baby’s death three days later. Conscience protection for doctors who object to this form of “abortion” is non-existent.  

With this background, I flew to Bolivia in March to speak at the Ibero-American Congress for Life and Family. My goal? Challenge the pro-life leaders from across Latin America to empower their own youth to form teams of active lifesavers that will change their nations - now and in the future. 

At this conference, I met Maria Teresa, the head of a Bolivian pro-life coalition. Determined to equip the next generation in Bolivia, she invited our team to come back this month for a LIFESAVER Practicum. 

During the inner-healing aspect of our pro-life 101 training, Rachel and Michelle saw many of the students deeply impacted by the depth of God’s love for them. This empowered them to overcome their fear and engage in over 80 conversations with strangers about abortion on the streets of La Paz. Of these, 57% of the Bolivians advocated for abortion. By the end of the conversation, 48% had changed their minds, and 23 people gave us their contact info, willing to get involved themselves.
