Colombia: Let the Goal be Heaven

"Let the Goal be Heaven."

The words were scribbled on a note for us to find after a busy day of hands-on training with our first Colombian Life Team in the tiny mountain town of Tunja, Colombia.

Tunja is home to La UPTC, a public university that has been increasingly targeted by progressive feminists and abortion advocates. Though our time in Tunja was short, we trained the student leaders in Pro-Life 101 and Pro-Life Conversations. As the sun set and a chilly winter evening set in, we had 14 conversations in the streets. Eleven people we spoke with supported abortion. After our discussions, 54% of these people shifted their hearts as they discovered THE TRUTH OF LIFE IN THE WOMB.

The LIFE Team TERCER FIAT fights daily for the lives and souls of the people in Tunja, specifically their fellow university students who blindly follow the cultural tide. As we travel by taxi through the mountains back to Bogota to catch our flight, our hearts are full.

Our time in Colombia began with a two-day LIFESAVER Practicum in Cartagena. We ministered to over 100 middle and high school students at a Christian school in an underserved part of the city. We even had students fly in from the cities of Barranquilla and Bogota just to attend our practicum! The key to our ministry is training these young people to spread the love and truth of Christ in their own communities.

After receiving training, our students went into the streets and had 653 conversations about abortion with local residents. Out of those 653 conversations, the students recruited an astounding 442 people to also be lifesavers. This speaks to the hunger of Colombians to be a part of the work God is doing. 

At the practicum in Cartagena, one of the students received a sobering call; her father had been killed. 

She immediately cried out in sadness and anguish. After she went home with her grandmother to grieve the loss of her father, all 100 of us there at the practicum gathered together. We prayed for this student, the loving daughter of a father she'd just lost, for her entire family, and all those grieving.

"For me, it definitely reinforced the dignity of life," said Rachel, our Latin America Coordinator who was leading the practicum.

Life is such a precious gift. Sometimes, in the pro-life world, we lose sight of our goal and see abortion as a statistic. We must remember to fight to save the one, not the many.
